The characters can move in the environment, pick up weapons, throw objects, give instructions to AI partners, and pull off moves on multiple opponents. Urban Reign features both single player and multiplayer action with both multiple AI opponents and human controlled characters on the same screen fighting at the same time. The game's fighting engine is inspired by the solid mechanics of Tekken and Soul Calbur, and selected characters from those popular Namco fighting game series play cameo roles in Urban Reign. Throughout Urban Reign's approximately 100 short missions, the player's character will make new friends and battle many, many foes, using both bare knuckles and improvised weaponry. In addition, the multi-player mode of Urban Reign allows for up to four people to compete against one another to see who truly reigns supreme over the neighborhood.Players take the role of a mercenary thug, hired to serve as bodyguard to a prominent street gang leader, in this beat-'em-up adventure by Namco. The gameplay focuses on an urban brawler style of street fighting, and players can team up with an AI-controlled character to perform a variety of lethal and destructive combination moves against several opponents across the game’s one hundred levels. The players have access to over 30 different weapons, such as bottles, bats, and 2x4s, which they can employ in the destructible arenas to further the chaos and mayhem that is already present. Each of these fighters has its own distinctive set of combat skills, which can include boxing, wrestling, and street fighting. More than sixty different fighters compete against one another in a variety of settings, including back alleys, junkyards, and pubs. The action in Urban Reign is non-stop and takes place in an urban setting, and there are neither time limits nor referees to interfere. Players are thrust into the middle of a full-scale turf war, which involves gang corruption and street justice and extends from the individual residential block all the way up to the higher echelons of municipal government. When playing Urban Reign, players step into the shoes of a gritty street brawler who has been hired by one of the most powerful gangs in the city to protect the boss of that gang.
